The Big Picture

You fly into Cancún.
The adventure
branches from there.

When most travelers hear "Mexico," Cancún is the first word that comes to mind — and for good reason. It's one of the most connected airports in the hemisphere, with direct flights arriving from cities across North America and beyond.

But landing in Cancún is just the beginning. From that single hub, an entire coast unfolds: laid-back islands, boutique towns, ancient jungle ruins, and some of the most extraordinary turquoise water on earth. Each destination along the Mexican Caribbean is its own universe — different rhythm, different crowd, different magic.

Whether you're chasing luxury, adventure, romance, or something you haven't quite named yet, the stretch of coast between Cancún and Tulum has it waiting for you. And I've been to all of it — so let me help you find exactly where you belong.

Pick Your Perfect Vibe

01

The Classic

Cancún Proper

The original. The legend. Cancún's Hotel Zone is a 14-mile barrier island lined with powdery white sand and impossibly blue water. World-class resorts, a roaring nightlife scene, shopping, and every water sport imaginable make Cancún equal parts playground and relaxation destination. Don't overlook Downtown Cancún either — a lively Mexican city with local markets, authentic taquerias, and a genuine glimpse of everyday life.

The Sanctuary

Costa Mujeres

Just north of Cancún's energy, Costa Mujeres is where travelers go when they want the Mexican Caribbean's beauty without the noise. This emerging stretch of coastline is home to newer, larger-scale resorts set against some of the most pristine beach on the entire coast. The vibe is unhurried, the sunsets are legendary, and the sense of space — both on the beach and within the resorts — is genuinely rare.

The Mythic

Tulum

Tulum is unlike anywhere else in the world. Ancient Mayan cliff-top ruins overlooking turquoise water. A jungle-lined beach road dotted with design-forward boutique hotels and open-air restaurants. Sacred cenotes hidden beneath the earth. Tulum has evolved from a backpacker secret into a globally celebrated destination — boho-chic, wellness-forward, and architecturally stunning. The new Tulum International Airport makes it more accessible than ever.

The Island Escape

Isla Mujeres

A 20-minute ferry from Cancún and a world away in spirit. Golf carts are the preferred mode of transport. The main street is a kaleidoscope of color. Playa Norte consistently ranks among the best beaches on the planet — shallow, calm, and practically glowing. Swim with whale sharks seasonally, explore quiet coral reefs, and end every day with a fresh ceviche and a sky on fire. This island captures hearts like nowhere else in the region.

Festivals, Seasons & What to Expect

The Mexican Caribbean is a year-round destination, but each season brings its own character — from vibrant cultural celebrations to nature's own remarkable schedule. Here's how the year unfolds along the coast, so you can plan around what matters most to you.

A Note on Sargassum

Sargassum — a naturally occurring free-floating seaweed — washes ashore on parts of the Mexican Caribbean, particularly from late spring through early fall (roughly May–October, peaking July–September). Conditions vary dramatically by location and year. Costa Mujeres and Isla Mujeres are often less affected than areas further south. Many resorts deploy barriers and clean their beaches daily. It's a natural phenomenon, not a reason to cancel — but worth knowing so we can plan your destination and timing wisely together.

Handpicked Properties

Where Staying Is Part of the Experience

There are hundreds of resorts along the Mexican Caribbean coast. I've stayed in many of them. And over the years, a handful have genuinely earned a place in my heart — not because of marble lobbies or infinity pools (though those are wonderful), but because of something harder to quantify.

It's the chef who remembers you don't eat shellfish. The activities team that orchestrates an evening fire ceremony on the beach that leaves you genuinely moved. The staff member who greets you on Day 4 like a dear friend returning home. These are the resorts I recommend — where hospitality isn't just excellent, it's personal.

🍽️

Exceptional Dining

From fresh-catch ceviche stations to candlelit fine dining — menus that celebrate the region's incredible flavors.

🌅

Day & Night Experiences

Sunrise yoga, afternoon snorkeling, sunset cocktail hours, and starlit beach parties — every hour accounted for.

🤿

On-Site Activities

Curated daily programming — water sports, cultural workshops, cooking classes, and regional excursions.

🫂

Staff Like Family

Warm, genuine hospitality that makes you feel at home from day one — and brings you back year after year.

Destination 01

Cancún

My favorite Cancún properties sit right on the Hotel Zone's best stretches of beach — large enough to offer every amenity imaginable, yet intimate enough that the staff actually learns your name. The pools are spectacular, the nightly entertainment genuinely fun, and city access is unbeatable.

Destination 02

Costa Mujeres

The newest gems on the coast. Grand in scale but surprisingly personal in feel — expansive beach clubs, multiple pools, and restaurants that could hold their own anywhere in Mexico. The uncrowded beach alone is worth the slightly further drive.

Destination 03

Tulum

Open-air structures woven into the jungle, sustainable design, farm-to-table restaurants, and an atmosphere that blends deep relaxation with cultural immersion. My picks here are intimate, design-forward, and unforgettable. No two look the same.

Destination 04

Isla Mujeres

Smaller, boutique, and completely charming — Isla's best properties feel like staying at a beautifully designed island home. Rooftop terraces, fresh seafood breakfasts, and front-porch proximity to Playa Norte that makes every morning feel like a privilege.
